8 Apps I Have Installed On My USB Stick

These are 8 apps I cannot live without and I have managed to get portable/freeware versions of them and they all fit nicely under 256MB.

1. Google Chrome Portable

Google Chrome is my preferred web browser and this portable package allows you to take your bookmarks, extensions and saved passwords with you. Combined with LastPass, you will never want to use another browser setup again. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/google_chrome_portable

2. Filezilla Portable

FileZilla Portable is the portable version of the FileZilla FTP client and it allows you to take your server list and settings with you everywhere. It supports resume on both downloads and uploads, SFTP and an intuitive drag and drop interface. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/filezilla_portable

3. Skype Portable

Skype Portable offers the same functionality as the installed version and lets you connect to others via instant message, audio conferencing and video phone - and you can take it with you everywhere all configured. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/skype_portable

4. MWSnap

MWSnap is a small yet powerful hot-key snapping (capturing) program that snaps images from selected parts of the screen. Supports BMP, JPG, TIFF, PNG and GIF formats with configurable color depth and quality settings. http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

5. Foxit PDF Reader

Foxit PDF Reader is a fantastic alternative to Adobe Reader, that allows you to view and print PDF files. Unlike Adobe Reader, it opens PDF files very fast, without any delay. It supports all the standard features, browser integration, and also select/copy of text from the documents. http://portableapps.com/apps/office/foxit_reader_portable

6. Notepad++

Notepad++ Portable is a text editor that includes support for multiple languages and an extensive plugin system. It also offers Syntax Highlighting and Syntax Folding in many programming languages including C++, HTML, ASP and CSS, plus auto-completion and regex search/replace. All other text editors feel inferior to Notepad++. http://portableapps.com/apps/development/notepadpp_portable

7. PeaZip Portable

PeaZip Portable is a portable version of PeaZip, an open source application that allows you to extract over 130 different kinds of archive files. PeaZip also creates self-extracting archives, splits/joins archives, supports strong encryption and secure deletion and much more. http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/peazip_portable

8. WinMerge Portable

WinMerge Portable is a text file differencing and merging tool that allows you to compare files and determine what has changed between versions. You have the option to merge changes between the versions and the differences are highlighted so you can easily see them. With syntax highlighting, line numbers and word-wrap, this is one the best programmers tools around. http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/winmerge_portable
